The question on everyone’s (in the sports world) mind today is whether or not Nick Saban will announce his return to college football and take the helm for Alabama at 10 am this morning. Nick Saban was offered the job in Tuscaloosa last year (December) but turned it down. "I'm not going to be the Alabama coach." (Nick Saban, December 21, 2006). But this is a new year, and Saban is giving the thought of becoming the highest paid coach in college football a second thought.
Pros
There is no question that Dolphin’s owner, Wayne Huizenga wants Saban to stay in Miami. He wants the coach to turn the team around and finish the three years/$4.5 million per yr contract. Huizenga will probably have to give the coach a “bump in pay if he wants him to stay”-look for the return of late-fees at BlockBuster Video. Saban is 15-17 in two seasons with the Dolphins. Miami’s 6-10 record in 2006 gave Saban his first losing season as a head coach in 13 years.
Or Cons
All right, so they are not really “cons”, Bama’s program is not on NCAA probation any longer, but even worse is that the Tide finished this year 6-7 after losing to Oklahoma State in last week’s Independence Bowl. Alabama is offering coach Saban a reported $40 million contract over 8-10 years-guaranteed money. Alabama is a tough program with high expectations, but seriously--other than the tall-tales of the legend in a checkered hat--how many 17-year old high school kids down in the Delta remember the Bear? These young recruits do however; remember coach Saban and his 2003 BCS Title with LSU. And Saban is still in the spotlight in Miami-meaning, he could do some heavy recruiting in the Alabama, Mississippi Delta to Florida region.
It is hard to say, but I think coach Saban would be a better fit back in the SEC coaching the Tide. If he stayed there for 10 years and then returned to the NFL, I am sure most owners would forget him bailing out after 2-years at Miami. I think the only reason Saban would stay with the Dolphins is for his wife. Think about it, she’s lived in some locales not as attractive as Miami, Floria. Mrs. Saban lived in Toledo, Ohio (Saban was 9-2 in 1990), East Lansing, MI (Saban was 35-24-1 from 1995-1999) and Mrs. Saban lived in Baton Rouge (Saban was 48-16 from 2000 to 2004). Do you think she wants to give up the warm-sun of Miami for Tuscaloosa? I think that he’ll surprise everyone and stay at Miami, but I guess, we’ll have to wait until 10 am to see.
