Cougars Lose to Davidson But the Cougs looked good!

Despite only shooting 25% from behind the arc and 37% from the field, the College of Charleston Cougars looked good tonight against the Wildcats. It seemed as though every time the Cougars started to get things going a media time out or an arrant foul would take place; thus ending our momentum. Did we get robbed by the officials with that last foul called by the zebras to send Steph Curry to the line? Yes, but the SoCon refs are part-time CofC haters and have picked our pockets more than once through the years. But let's be honest, the Cougars will beat Davidson later on in the season, all the Cougars need is for their legs to look a little more conditioned and the shots fall a little better.

Free-Throw Juice
Regardless, the Cougars looked good. Jermaine Johnson(as Goldfinger would say) drank his "free-throw juice", hitting 10-12 from the charity stripe and 3-8 from the field notching 16 points for the game. Goudelock was 10-22 from the field and 2-9 from behind the arc (take the extra dribble before you pull up kid) as Andrew put up 22 points to lead the Cougars in the game. Tony White Jr looked great hitting 4-9 from the field and 2-5 from behind the arc. That kid has really come of age this season. Marcus Hammond did the Cougs a solid on defense and was 2-4 from the field and 2-5 from behind the arc.

Ball Hawg!
Sure Stephanie Curry scored 29 points but he was off to a slow start in the first half and Davidson suffered trailing the Cougars until the 6 minute mark before the half. The next Wildcat even close to the young ball hog was Will Reauchambeaux (actually it might be Archambault-sorry my media guide is a bit blurred on that one) with 14 points. Stevie "Wonder" Rossiter put up 11 points to become the only other Wildcat with double-digit points.

As we all watched Momma Curry nervously (albeit "she looked smashingly fabulous" as my non-heterosexual friends from Davidson would say) waiting for the time to expire as our beloved Cougars closed in on her son's squad. We also saw something else, North Carolina Hall of Famer and former Charlotte Hornet who kept the "Hive Alive" with one heck of a sweet shot, Dell Curry (aka: Papa Bear) shook his head in discontent as he saw his son's genetically inherited "quick and sweet" released shot over and over. You could read on the jumbo-tron his lips saying, "Pass the ball son, don't be a hog". But alas, his son (who had a few mentionable assists in the first half) was the ball hog for the kids in Davidson red.

The Breakdown
Teams: 1st 2nd  Final
Davidson: 44 35 79
CofC: 33 42 75

Ken Mink, 73 Year Old Still Shooting For The Roane State Raiders!

As we now wait for the election results
Fifty-three years ago, Ken Mink dropped out of Ju-Co in Kentucky and joined the Air Force putting his NCAA eligibility and college career on hold. Today at the age of 73 he is wearing the number 13 and is a shooting guard for the Roane State Raiders. (Roane State competes in the Tennessee Junior Community College Athletic Association.)

As promised, this is the video I watched on Nate Ross' iPhone this morning whilst waiting to punch my vote for Obama. The best part of this video is when they mention he had to get his wife's permission to go to a party, to which she replied "No". I guess, the Bushido's Papi was right about guys from Kentucky-they can shoot!

Wildcats Nightmare

Blackie and I were out watching the Tarheels take on Virginia tonight at Manny's when I looked over at one of the large tvs to catch the score on the Kentucky vs Vandy game. I thought for a moment that my eye-sight was going or perhaps the "Budweisitis" was kicking in when I saw the score-which looked like Vandy 31 to Kentucky's 10 with just a couple of minutes left in the first half. Impossible, my eyes are playing tricks on me, the Wildcats beat Vandy earlier this year-that must be a three instead of a one. I was wrong.

Kentucky did turn around in the second half, but it was too little too late. The Wildcats lost by 40 points, not their worst loss in history, (that record is held by Rick Pitino's Wildcats when they lost to Kansas on December 9, 1989 by the score of 150-95) just the second worst loss in the 80 years of Kentucky basketball. For all of those folks out there whispering about how Tubby would have never lost that bad; just a reminder, Tubby's squad at Minnesota was losing by 24 to Illinois. BCG still has control of the team and the players seem to be picking up on his system since the Christmas break, but it would be hard for the Wildcats to get a bid for the NCAA Tournament with a loss like tonight and a Gardner-Webb loss on the resume.

UNC Hosts Duke Tonight @ 9 PM

One of the greatest rivalries in college basketball resumes tonight as the Duke Blue Devils travel the eight miles down Tobacco Road to Chapel Hill to take on the Tarheels. Duke enters the game (19-1, 7-0) ranked No. 2 in the nation. UNC (21-1, 6-1) is No. 3.

Bad Blood
The last time these two teams met, Duke's Gerald Henderson came across the paint to throw a flying forearm into the face of UNC's Tyler Hansbrough. With a broken nose, Hansbrough would go to the dance wearing a face-mask, a memory still quite fresh in all of our minds.

Q-turnover
Much of the Tarheel faithful are quite concerned with the loss of point-guard Ty Lawson (high-ankle sprain). His replacement will be (gasp) Quinton Thomas (aka: "Q-Turnover"). But I think we can put these apprehensions to rest after watching Q look like he might know what he is doing during the Florida State game. Will Thomas morph into the player that we thought he might develop into? If this is any consolation, Thomas' stats vs Duke seem "optimistic": 29 minutes, 8 assists and only 1 turnover.

GO HEELS!

Coach Bobby Knight Announces His Retirement

We could have posted one of Coach Knight's chair-throwing tantrums to celebrate his retirement, but we decided to go ahead with a more "neighborly" video. Here is the video of Bobby arguing with his neighbor after shooting at his neighbor's home. I am not sure if you call this arrogance or just a sociopath's behavior. But it is somewhat entertaining.

Cougs win 74 to 62 over the Citadel

Wednesday's WTF? How the F is Clemson undefeated?

How is it that the Clemson Tigers are 17-0, 3-0 (ACC) and the only undefeated team in the nation in College Basketball? WTF is going on in the up-state? Not that beating the 10-6 Wolfpack is something to cheer about, but this is the best start for the Tigers since Horace Grant wore the blzae orange and purple (a decade ago.)

Are the Tigers the real deal? We'll wait and see until next Wednesday when they welcome the very talented and very hot North Carolina Tarheels to Littlejohn Coliseum if they can handle ACC-competition. (Photo of Clemson Cheerleader compliments of CuTigers.com)

Sunday Basketball Scores:
Heels v Terps
The #21st ranked University of North Carolina Tarheels swept the Maryland Terps 81-57 and earned a 1st round bye in the ACC Tournament. Freshman Tyler Hansbrough had his 11th game this season with at least 20-points scoring 21-points and 7-boards. David Noel and and Marcus Ginyard both scored 12-points putting any chance Maryland had of redeption from their previous meeting to bed. Ekene Ibekwe scored 12-points and Mike Jones had 11-points for the Terps, but it wasn't enough to cool the hot tar the Heels mopped across the floor.
The Terrapins are now 16-11 and 6-8 in the ACC. The Tarheels are now 19-6 and 10-4 in the ACC.

Bama v Florida

It seems 9th ranked Florida met the Man of Steele tonight but left their Kryptonite at home, losing 82-77. Ronald Steele went 6 for 6 at the line, leading the Tide with 20-points and 7-assists. Hendrix had 14-boards as the Tide rolled all over the Gators. Taurean Green led the Gators going 4 for 10 from behind the arch scoring 20-points.
The Gators are now 22-6, 8-6 SEC. Alabama is now 2nd in the SEC behind LSU and are 16-10, 9-5 SEC. Bama has their last season game against in-state rival Auburn on Wednesday, March 1 at 7 pm.

Big East Rematch
2nd ranked Villanova marched into UConn as the highest ranked team the Huskies have played at home. UConn wasn't about to hang their heads as they did earlier this season and put away Nova quite methodically 89-75. Ray led Villanova with 19-points, Sheridan had 11-boards and Lowry led with 4-assists. Leaders for the Huskies were Brown with 23-points, Adrien with 7-boards and Williams led with 10-assists.
UConn is now 25-2 and Villanova is 22-3 for the season.

In case you missed it go to the Budweiser Kaiser to read "Kaiser Chief" Brad's recap of games from Saturday and the special I saw on EPSN Sports-Center tonight about the autist High School Varsity BBall team manager named Jason McElwain who played and scored 20-points (hitting 5-three-pointers) in his first and only high school basketball game.
