What he leaves us is what he said, what he did and what he stood for. I never really followed up on the specifics of the how’s and the why’s, I just knew there was some special pigment in the ink which prevented check-fraud.<br /><br /> Alas, I have now seen the demo <span style="color:#ff6600;">(thanks to Jenny for sending it to me)</span> of how this pen actually prevents check-fraud: crooks dip the top portion of your check in acetone (a paint thinner found at any art supply or hardware store) for close to 3-minutes, removing the “date”, “To” and most importantly the amount which you had written on the check. If you used a normal pen (that has a dye based ink) everything the crook wants to remove will be gone in about three and half minutes. However, if you used the Uni-ball 207, which has special pigments that adhere to the page your original information will remain intact. Had he done so, then I would have been able to use the turn lane but instead he just parked his cruiser right there in the middle of the lane-oblivious to what was going on in the world; and to think, I could have not been eight minutes late to work if he would have just pulled up just short of two feet. Then again, these hopeful thoughts are all for naught as once the light turned green the deputy decided to turn right anyway and I was caught by the West Ashley bridge <span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">(malfunctioning?)</span> for 45-minutes as we had to let a sailboat get out into the harbor.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">A Growing Trend</span><br />Charlestonians have often lamented about tourists needing to "go back to Ohio"-heck they even started a web-site-because the growing sentiment is that tourists cause traffic problems. I don't buy it; a majority of the "yahoos" I see causing T-total cluster-f's have South Carolina tags on the back of their cars and either a Clemson sticker or (sadly) a Citadel sticker somewhere on the window or bumper. Which while I am on topic, wtf wouldn't you know to merge into the right lane on the down ramp (heading towards town) by the round Holiday Inn (especially if you went to school here for 4 years)? I hate to generalize Citadel grads and their driving ability but after years of making this trek at least once a day, five days a week, for quite a few years now, I can say about eighty percent of the time, there's a Citadel sticker on the back of the car who ends up stuck in the 10 feet of caution area awaiting to merge.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">Make the Connection</span><br />There's also a lot of hub-bub and hand-wringing (read: opposition) about the proposed (more than a decade ago-see big mound at the end of the James Island Connector across the street from Harris Teeter) extension of 526, which would finally connect the City with the surrounding greater-Charleston Metro area. I say make the connection. Anyone who travels Savannah Highway will tell you that it is a nightmare: stop and go traffic due to bad timing on the traffic lights, drivers won't travel 45 mph near the auto mile (the speed limit doesn't lower to 35 until you hit Ashley River Baptist Church) and all of this cow-herding of cars bottle-necks to a bridge that may or may not be standing upright allowing a sailboat to travel beneath. He replied, "Oh gosh no, in fact, I wish we could go back to closing at 7 pm." Seriously?<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">Leave it to Beaver or just leave Beaver</span><br />I can understand the gentleman's desire to hearken back to the old days when we all ate dinner together at 6:30 pm and the grocery closed early because most folks only made a trip to the "sto" once a week. But let's get with the times people, we work late, jam our schedules full of errands and appointments <span style="font-style: italic;">ad nauseum</span>. And let's face it, convenience stores these days just are not that convenient.<br /><br />Just recently, Home Depot decided to open an hour earlier and stay open an hour later. How friggin awesome is that? Countless times, I have broken something (whilst trying to repair something else) or been mid-way into a project when I realized I needed something-that I could only find-from HD or Lowes (not the 24-hour Super Wal-Mart) and then looked at the clock only to realize I had fifteen minutes before they closed. Not anymore baby! <span style="color: rgb(255, 102, 0); font-weight: bold;">(FYI: Lowes decided to match their cross-street competition and match Home Depot's hours). </span>I even filled out my first receipt-questionairre exclaiming how I loved the later hours @ Home Depot and wished they would advertise this new change so more people would take advantage of their new closing time.<br /><br />For those great deciders who changed the hours @ Lowes &amp; Home Depot-Bravo! (Photo courtesy of <a href="http://blogs.trb.com/sports/baseball/blog/Rickey-Henderson-939-Stolen-Bases-1991-Photograph-C10103677.jpg">TRB.com</a>)<br /><br />Henderson's talent of stealing bases was smiled upon by the baseball gods when Ricky was drafted (in the fourth round in 1976) by the <a href="http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/index.jsp?c_id=oak">Oakland A's</a>: under skipper Billy Martin's unique approach to the game known as<span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; color: rgb(51, 204, 0);"> "Billy Ball"</span> Henderson was given the green light to run and with<span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(51, 204, 0);"> Dwayne Murphy</span> (a true fast-ball hitter) batting behind Ricky, pitchers had to throw Murphy the curve ball a perfect pitch to run on allowed Ricky to pass Brock's single-season record of 118 stolen bases in a season (Henderson would go on to steal 130 bases that season-a record he still holds).<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">Headed to Cooperstown</span><br />When <span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">Sabermetrics</span> (Society for American Baseball Research) inventor <span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">Bill James</span> was asked if Henderson was worthy of the Hall of Fame, James replied, "If you could split him in two, you would have two Hall of Fame pitchers." It seemed as though every time the Cougars started to get things going a media time out or an arrant foul would take place; thus ending our momentum. Did we get robbed by the officials with that last foul called by the zebras to send <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold; ">Steph Curry</span> to the line? Yes, but the SoCon refs are part-time CofC haters and have picked our pockets more than once through the years. But let's be honest, the Cougars will beat Davidson later on in the season, all the Cougars need is for their legs to look a little more conditioned and the shots fall a little better. <div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(153, 0, 0); ">Free-Throw Juice</span></span></div><div>Regardless, the Cougars looked good.<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(153, 0, 0); "> Jermaine Johnson</span></span>(as Goldfinger would say) drank his "free-throw juice", hitting 10-12 from the charity stripe and 3-8 from the field notching 16 points for the game. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(153, 0, 0); ">Goudelock</span></span> was 10-22 from the field and 2-9 from behind the arc (take the extra dribble before you pull up kid) as Andrew put up 22 points to lead the Cougars in the game. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(153, 0, 0); ">Tony White Jr</span></span> looked great hitting 4-9 from the field and 2-5 from behind the arc. That kid has really come of age this season. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(153, 0, 0); ">Marcus Hammond</span></span> did the Cougs a solid on defense and was 2-4 from the field and 2-5 from behind the arc. <br /><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(153, 0, 0); ">Ball Hawg!</span></span></div><div>Sure Stephanie Curry scored 29 points but he was off to a slow start in the first half and Davidson suffered trailing the Cougars until the 6 minute mark before the half. The next Wildcat even close to the young ball hog was Will Reauchambeaux (actually it might be Archambault-sorry my media guide is a bit blurred on that one) with 14 points. Stevie "Wonder" Rossiter put up 11 points to become the only other Wildcat with double-digit points. </div><div><br /></div><div>As we all watched Momma Curry nervously (albeit "she looked smashingly fabulous" as my non-heterosexual friends from Davidson would say) waiting for the time to expire as our beloved Cougars closed in on her son's squad. We also saw something else, North Carolina Hall of Famer and former Charlotte Hornet who kept the "Hive Alive" with one heck of a sweet shot, Dell Curry (aka: Papa Bear) shook his head in discontent as he saw his son's genetically inherited "quick and sweet" released shot over and over. You could read on the jumbo-tron his lips saying, "Pass the ball son, don't be a hog". I hate to be the one to say it, but Congresswoman Bachmann has just set women back a decade with this interview. Evidently, the nice stuff was just window-dressing for the RNC, but the content of what she said perplexes me. Bachmann alleged that Senator Barack Obama and other members of Congress hold “un-American views” and she proposed a media investigation into "the views of the people in Congress [to] find out: Are they pro-America or anti-America?" When are politicians going to stop the lies? You would think in this age of technology, with limitless information at our (dare I say Joe Plumbers) fingertips, politicians would stop blatantly lying about issues de jour.<br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#ff6600;">Oh the Irony</span></strong><br />One would think that after appearing on Tweety-Bird’s show and knocking it out of the park (or the exact opposite), Bachmann would have countless monies showered upon her, but the opposite is true, her opponent, <strong><span style="color:#ff6600;">Democrat Elwyn Tinklen</span><span style="color:#ff6600;">berg</span></strong> (someone I have never heard of but did receive a $25 pay-pal donation from the Bushido) raised 1.3 million dollars since Bachmann’s appearance on Hardball. Seriously, who the heck is going to watch this World Series Championship? Can one Japanese Second-baseman attract the attention of the baseball loving Japanese fans in Tokyo? Doubtful. Not that the Rays didn't win fair and square, but the Red Sox would have been more attractive to the Japanese markets. And I am not sure who on the West Coast will watch the game, or on the East Coast for that matter but it is the Fall Classic so someone will tune in (for sure).<br /><br /><span style="color: rgb(255, 102, 0); font-weight: bold;">Why Can't Tampa Support Their Team Even When They Win?</span><br />Indeed, this Rays fan is cheering on her beloved Rays at Fenway, as Tampa defeated Boston in the ALCS but she is one of the few, and if you notice that she is not watching her Rays at Tropicana Field. She's watching it at the Fens. Not that the venue isn't attractive at Tropicana, but the town <span style="color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">(or the fan-base for lack of a better word) </span>doesn't support the team. And I guess, now would be the appropriate time to ask, why? Do people not make enough money to buy the ticket to the game? Has the economy crapped on Tampa more than the rest of the country? Are their players too young and too new to baseball that they don't have names to screen on to the backs of jerseys to sell to young kids? If you can explain it, I'd love to read them in the comments section.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">Greed For Lack of A Better Word, Is Not Good</span><br />Something the suits in the front-office of Major League Baseball seem to miss out on in their insatiable chase for the all mighty dollar is that Baseball is America's sport! Major League Baseball and Bud Selig have forgotten the fans; they've forgotten the people who pay those million dollar paychecks. And baseball is missing an entire generation of kids right now. Sure you can dismiss my last point, but crunch the numbers, kids are playing baseball less and less each year. Part of this could be that these games which start at 8 or 9 pm are way past some (little) people's bed-times. And where do you go to watch highlights or something sofa-king awesome that happened on the diamond? Not on You-Tube. Put something that involves the MLB on You-Tube and watch how fast you get the post removed and have your account closed-uuups. Did the coach’s plane crash? Did the team bus flip off a bridge, crash and burn leaving no survivors? You are setting a bad example for young men across this great state. Which brings me to a conversation I had with “Sweets” the other night: my boy, Cash, was whining and whimpering about something, <strong><span style="color:#ff6600;">(probably because Daddy was on the phone and not paying him any attention) </span></strong>and I told him, to stop, “Traberts don’t cry”. To which, “Sweets” said, “Cash, it’s OK to cry”. There's much to question with Auburn's lack of offense under new offensive-coordinator Tony Franklin at the helm, <span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">Auburn </span>has scored just three touchdowns in the first six weeks of college football. Auburn is 4-1, 2-1 in the SEC, with a 3-2 final score on their win over <span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0); font-weight: bold;">Mississippi State</span>.<br /><br />And now, we turn to Vanderbilt. Vandy is 4-0, 2-0 in the SEC<span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0); font-weight: bold;"> (beating Ol'Miss and South Carolina)</span>. Vandy is ranked 19th in the nation-their highest ranking in 52 years and haven't had a winning season in the last 25 years <span style="color: rgb(255, 102, 0); font-weight: bold;">(see stat snapped from ABC broadcast)</span> which means no one on Vandy's squad was alive the last time the school had a winning season. Granted Vanderbilt is in a tough (SEC) conference <span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; color: rgb(255, 204, 51);">(the Commodores are ranked 12th in total offense)</span> and they do have tough academic standards which is prehaps the reason, Vandy also has the smallest stadium in the SEC with a capacity of just 39,000-that's only 11,000 more than the <a href="http://www.citadelsports.com/">Citadel Bulldogs stadium</a>. Yet, the Commodores are #1 in turnover margins, #1 in the nation in least amount of penalties and have an excellent chance of winning today; if they can prevent third-down conversions (read: Auburn's run attack) and continue their unique knack for gaining excellent field advantage. As you all know, the Bushido is not a fan of Senator Joe Biden and neither should you be Sara Palin-he's your opponent. Now, the word on the street is that he's not going after you because the polling shows that any move against your record will be seen as an attack on all women. So instead of those "golly-geesh" comments that make idiots like you-say something substantial (i.e. Senator, you say you are for working-class Americans but you wrote the Universal Credit Bill which allows credit card companies the ability to jack cardholders rates to the max if they are late on just one of their bills. You could even put a face on it; let's talk about Jed, a single-dad, college graduate living in South Carolina who didn't pay the entire payment on one of his student loans, he paid it the next month, but before that payment was received his two credit cards raised the interests rates on his cards to 29%. Now Senator, how is a single-working father supposed to make ends meet? Then the only place to take money from is the Social Security coffers, which those naysayers say will be broke before the X-Generation gets to the age of retirement. And why will it be broke? Because these spend-thrift Republicans keep covering their tax-cuts, government expansions and war-chests by "writing a bad check to Peter to pay Paul" (not Ron Paul).<br /><br />For Pit-Stop, I knew that Ron Paul would not win his party's nomination because, sadly, he is way too smart to be a Republican.<span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 102, 0);"> Look, deny it all you want Repubs, but for the most part, Republicans are not the "thinkers" of the bunch. Republicans like "red-meat": facts-dumb, environment-gay; gun-control-hello, did you forget about the 2nd Amendment?</span> If you want to win, just say something about terrorism and how the liberal American hating Democrats can't protect this country. In the primaries, Ron Paul answered one of the questions smartly as that is not a decision for the president of the United States under our Constitution. Dag-Jimmit! Could you not hear the crickets? Capt Hairdo (<span style="color: rgb(255, 102, 0); font-weight: bold;">and former East-coast elitist</span>) announced that he would "fight terrorism over there so we wouldn't have to fight them over here"-cheers! Is it that easy Republicans that you won't listen to "smart" people because they care about America's role on the world's stage? Or that they might have ideas that are outside of the small-minded box?<br /><br />And for all of those pithy comments about how you don't vote Democratic because you work and you don't think government should be the source of handouts <span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">(read: Welfare)</span>; well, these government bailouts to Wall Street are (<a href="http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/23/paul.bailout/index.html?iref=newssearch">Ron Paul has this one right-link to Paul's article on the Bailouts</a>) nothing more than covering the risks that investment banks knowingly took and now know as long as they are a direct correlation between Wall Street and Main Street, they can take all the chances they want, because for all intensive purposes they are playing with the "houses money" (read: you, the American tax-payers money). Also, the Gamecocks #1 receiver (McKinley) is out for the game. But forget what you know or have read leading up to this game, because regardless of how stellar Georgia is or how bad the Gamecocks are, this game will be close; it always is. Call it sensitivity, much a do about nothing or just give it a name. I thought this speech to have that mid-western plain-speak and since I grew up on a farm and listened to my father and his friends talk politics while on the back porch, I've heard the old "you can put lip-stick on a pig, but it's still a pig" saying countless times. That being said, as the audience applauded with laughter, I notice there is probably a bit of double-entendre with him saying this a week after Palin's speech at the RNC, but give me a break people. You all can let your guard down just a bit.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">Two Reasons</span><br />I don't think Obama needs to apologize for what he said for two reasons: 1) Palin took shots at Obama for being a "community organizer" which brought laughs because evidently the whitest and oldest of the oldest and whitest at the RNC didn't understand that being a "community organizer" is an actual and important job. 2) Politicians (for the most part) give the same speech ad nauseum, just as a well scripted performance of an age old play. We all know <span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);">Romeo &amp; Juliet</span> but when you see it live, Mercutio's jokes are always due for a refreshing laugh. And since most of the country didn't see Sarah Palin run for Mayor or Governor before her debut in Dayton-which most of us didn't watch-we didn't know the difference between a hockey mom and a pit-bull; well we did know the difference, we just hadn't heard the joke. Which for the un-funny people out there, is a common courtesy to extend the joke-teller.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">Something to cry about</span><br />Obama, don't apologize and keep giving it to them when they dish it out. I am tired of these Republicans and their cry-baby, tattle-tail, defeat-again attitudes. There’s a lot to be gained from paying attention to other cultures, and that’s something La Cosa Nostra has done better than just about anyone. It’s also something that’s kept us turning a steady profit since it all started. Just as some corporate hawks have torn pages straight out of our manuals, we have learned a thing or two from older, more established organizations, especially those from distant lands.<br /><br />I know what you might be thinking: “The Italian mob learns from other cultures? Yeah right, imagine that.” The thing is, so many uninformed people view La Cosa Nostra as being too old-fashioned for its own good, too set in its ways. It’s true that the old-school Dons --- the <i>Moustache Petes</i> --- who vied for power up until the mid-1900s were stuck in the old way of doing things, but this stubbornness and refusal to adapt would also lead to their eventual downfall. The next generation of leaders were savvy businessmen who could keep up with new pressures and adjust to the new demands of the American people and the ever-increasing presence of the authorities. How did they do this? They watched what was going on around them and took what they could from other similar organizations. One of these “<a href="http://www.askmen.com/money/mafioso_150/160_mafia.html">schools</a> of thought” was Bushido, the ancient Japanese code of conduct and the way of the samurai. Let’s take a look at some lessons from Bushido that you can learn.<br /><h3 style="color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">What is Bushido?</h3> Bushido is the 1,000-year-old Japanese code of conduct that nobles were required to observe and today is still practiced by men all over the world. It combined the fierce ways of the samurai class with the more serene and spiritual teachings of Zen-Buddhism and Confucianism. Above all, the code stressed “frugality, loyalty, martial arts mastery, and honor unto death,” and the ethos is still cherished in Japanese society today.<br /><br />For centuries, the laws of Bushido were not written down anywhere for people to read. At best, they consisted of a few maxims handed down in the oral <a href="http://www.askmen.com/money/mafioso_100/144_mafia.html">tradition</a> or that perhaps were passed on to others by a well-known warrior. That was until 1685, when the scholar Yamagei Yoko codified the way of the samurai and offered up seven principles that could be used as guidance for anyone who wished to emulate them.<br /><h3 style="color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">The 7 Principles of Bushido</h3> <b style="color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">1- Loyalty</b><br />The foundation of La Cosa Nostra, loyalty to one’s organization (in our case, <i>la famiglia</i>) was also a central point among followers of Bushido. The samurai was loyal to his overlord (his <i>daimyo</i>) and no one else. He didn’t have to explain his actions to anyone apart from his <a href="http://www.askmen.com/money/mafioso_150/158_mafia.html"><i>capo</i></a>, and lived by a completely different set of rules than the rest of the Japanese populace. Remind you of anyone?<br /><br /><b style="color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">2- Honor</b><br />Death before dishonor was simply how it went for the samurai. And once honor had been been lost, the only way to get it back was by performing <i>seppuku</i>, ritual suicide achieved by slicing open one’s belly and letting the innards fall to the ground, all while an audience watched. It might seem a bit severe, but it perfectly illustrates the devotion that Bushido members had for their superiors.<br /><br /><b style="color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">3- Bravery</b><br />No fear of death and the idea of practicing self-sacrifice are a few lessons from Bushido. Easier said than done, right? The good samurai would never hesitate to put his personal needs last, especially if it was best for the group. It is said that a true warrior would rush onto the point of an oncoming sword if it meant that something would be gained by his clan. That type of bravery is seldom seen nowadays, and it could explain the steady decline of the American mob.<br /><b><br /><span style="color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">4- Respect</span></b><br />The samurai held a deep respect for tradition and the established order of things. In turn, they demanded respect from the masses and were well within their rights to execute, on the spot, anyone who failed to bow down to them in their presence. In my family’s line of work, it can be just as dangerous when the right people aren’t properly acknowledged and given the respect they believe they’re entitled to.<br /><b><br /><span style="color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">5- Benevolence</span></b><br />Bushido combined the spirituality of Zen with the teachings of Confucius, which meant that the individual could never be seen as any more important than any other. The ability to exhibit compassion for those less fortunate is perhaps seen as an outdated mode today, but back in the medieval ages it was expected of even the fiercest warrior.<br /><b><br /><span style="color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">6- Honesty</span></b><br />The samurai was bound by his word, and anyone who was proven to have acted insincerely was stripped of his status and subjected to the worst possible position -- that of a disgraced warrior. This might not fly today in the hustling world of the gangster, but you can be sure that dishonesty will eventually catch up with you.<br /><br /><b style="color: rgb(255, 102, 0);">7- Rectitude</b><br />The samurai believed that it was better to lose his life than to appear rude or arrogant.
